Carl Shortt - Creations In WoodArtist: Carl Shortt - Creations In Wood
I have been attracted to wood and the process of making things with it for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used leftover lumber to make toy airplanes and boats, stick horses and scooters. Now I use wood to make decorative and functional lathe-turned vessels. Many facets of my woodworking interest have changed over the years; however, two constants remain, the need to make things with my hands and the use of discarded wood.

My favorite element of the woodturning art form is the creativity centered around transforming trees otherwise destined for the landfill or the fireplace into something both useful and beautiful.

The most challenging aspect is in seeing the possibilities of shape and form that best accentuate the unique qualities contained within each piece of raw wood.

Dixie BiggsArtist: Dixie Biggs
The woodturnings of Dixie Biggs combine the highest craftsmanship in both her selection of materials and in their shaping on Dixie's lathe. The intricate carvings that cover the surfaces of many of her pieces are inspired by nature and are not mere embellishments but seem an integral part of the particular piece of wood she is focused on as she works, unlocking classic, balanced forms from rough logs which she seems able to see into from the first time she touches them.

I turn each piece on a lathe using hand held chisels. After the turning process is complete I embellish the surface of much of my work using various carving tools, both hand held and power carvers. Often the wood will dictate what kind of surface texture I use. Many of my designs are inspired by my love of the trees themselves and the world of nature around me.

Galen Carpenter WoodturnerArtist: Galen Carpenter Woodturner
Galen is modest about the wood vessels he makes in his Sedona, Arizona workshop. He envisions form, color and wood grain all interacting while making these eye-catching, one-of-a-kind art pieces. His work has been described as having the formal purity of classical pottery and the sophistication of fine furniture.

Carpenter, a self-taught turner, combines different woods cut into segments and laminated in such a way that the turning process exposes striking geometric patterns. His palette incorporates turquoise, coral, bone, antler, and epoxy, along with domestic and exotic woods.

George Saridakis - Decoratively Sculpted WoodArtist: George Saridakis - Decoratively Sculpted Wood
My goal is to create wood art that enhances the joy and quality of life with its beauty - both to look at and to touch - and to enjoy the art of designing and working with wood. My designs are inspired by folk art from various cultures and elements of nature. I am currently making pierced lidded bowls, flower vases, and thin delicate ornaments.

George Saridakis, a self-taught wood artisan, always wanted to work with wood. In 1982, he finally realized his dream while making furniture for his home. In 1992, his desire to continue developing his woodworking skills led him to woodturning, and later to scrollsawing. He currently combines both woodturning and scrollsawing using native and exotic woods to create functional and decorative art. A signature of his work is the smooth and lustrous finish.

Lee Tree WoodworksArtist: Lee Tree Woodworks
Exotic or unusual woods and burls are my materials of choice, and I believe the Australian burls are the most beautiful woods in the world. They have a variety of colors, and are truly individual and amazing as I turn them. Whatever wood I use, I try to let the individual beauty of the wood emerge in my work.

Occasionally, I will leave some of the natural exterior the wood intact, showing the contrast between that rough texture and the beautiful quality of my work. Hence, my finished works aren’t classically “perfect,” but I think it gives them character.

Michael ModeArtist: Michael Mode
Inspired by the memory of an arab craftsmen seen in a Moroccan souk using an ancient style of bow lathe, Michael Mode began woodturning in 1975 via a whimsical experiment involving a foot powered lathe made from a sewing machine treadle and an assortment of odd mechanical parts. Within six months the experiment became a passionate creative pursuit and a motorized lathe replaced the foot powered version. A single book about woodturning written by a British production turner supplied Michael’s woodturning education.

Robert W. ChatelainArtist: Robert W. Chatelain
Robert Chatelain creates one of a kind vessels from native Vermont red maple, black cherry and box elder burl. He has developed a unique Hybrid Turning method to inlay the naturally occurring voids in the burl with colored resins and gold leaf.

His first turnings endeavored to highlight the natural grain of native and exotic woods in classical forms. He then turned laminated bowls, often combining rigid plastics and different wood species. This mixed-media approach matured to include bowls decorated with metal bands fastened with wooden wedges and bowls with gold or silver leafed collars.
